The Heart of Lake Como: Comacina Island, Villa Carlotta, and Bellagio

A full-day itinerary exploring botanical gardens, medieval history, and the timeless charm of the “Pearl of the Lake.”

If you are looking for the true essence of Lake Como, this tour will guide you to the very locations that made our region world-famous: from medieval ruins suspended above the water and the opulence of noble villas to the vibrant charm of Bellagio.

The Itinerary: Between Water and History

Morning: Comacina Island & Medieval Charm

Your day begins with a boat landing on Comacina Island—the only island on Lake Como. Today a peaceful sanctuary of nature and quiet, in the Middle Ages it stood as a formidable political and religious stronghold, earning the title of the “Christian Citadel.” Strolling through the atmospheric ruins of its ancient churches—destroyed during the historical conflicts between Como and Milan—you will step into a serene, timeless atmosphere.

Midday: The Elegance of Villa Carlotta

Continue toward Tremezzo to visit Villa Carlotta, an iconic 19th-century estate that enchanted writers, artists, and Grand Tour travelers.

  • The Art: Inside the villa, admire magnificent sculptural masterpieces, including works by Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen.
  • The Gardens: The botanical park is world-renowned—a seamless blend of Italian and English landscape design, celebrated for its spectacular spring displays of azaleas and rhododendrons.

Afternoon: Bellagio, Pearl of the Lake

A short ferry ride takes you across to Bellagio, situated precisely on the promontory that divides Lake Como into its southwestern and southeastern arms.

  • The Village: Lose yourself among iconic stone stairways, flower-draped alleys, and boutique artisan shops in the historic center.
  • Villa Melzi: During your free time, take a stroll through the gardens of Villa Melzi, where plane-tree avenues and classical monuments create a dreamlike setting along the shoreline.
