Trekking: Walking Suspended Between Sky and Lake

From historic merchant trails to the peaks of the Lepontine Alps: lace up your boots and discover the world’s most breathtaking panorama.

Vercana is the gateway to a hiker’s paradise. Staying here means trailheads literally start right outside your door. Whether you are looking for a relaxing stroll through chestnut groves or a climb to high-altitude peaks where eagles soar, Northern Lake Como guarantees unforgettable adventures.

1. Mount Legnone (2,609 m / 8,560 ft): Sovereign of the Lake

The sentinel of Lake Como, this iconic high peak dominates the entire skyline.

  • The Challenge: This is a true Alpine summit ascent rather than a simple walk. Reaching the summit cross requires good physical conditioning and surefootedness, but the reward is beyond words.
  • Why Do It: The summit offers complete 360-degree views: the entire Alpine arc, Lake Como directly below, and on clear days, views extending all the way to the spires of Milan Cathedral.

2. The Sentiero del Viandante: History at a Gentle Pace

One of Italy’s most famous hiking routes, retracing ancient trade paths along the eastern shore.

  • The Experience: A mid-slope trail traversing medieval hamlets, olive groves, and Romanesque chapels. The panoramic views over the lake are constant, serene, and breathtaking.

3. Via dei Monti Lariani: The High Trail of the Lake

A legendary trek winding between 1,000 and 1,500 meters (3,300–5,000 ft) elevation along the western shore.

  • The Experience: Hike through ancient mountain pastures, welcoming alpine huts, and centuries-old beech forests. It is the ideal route for unplugging and immersing yourself in mountain silence.

4. Ascent to Mount Berlinghera: The Ultimate Terrace

For those seeking the ultimate holiday photograph with moderate physical effort.

  • The Experience: A manageable climb leading to a scenic ridge. From the summit, your gaze sweeps across Lake Como, Lake Mezzola to the north, and the snow-capped peaks of Valtellina.

5. Panoramic Walks Direct from Vercana

No car needed to experience the outdoors. Cobblestone mule tracks start right from the Residence, ascending toward the mountain hamlets of Vercana and Trezzone—perfect for a morning hike amidst local forest scents.

Notes for Hikers

  • Weather: Always check the forecast before setting out, especially for Mount Legnone, as mountain weather changes rapidly.
  • Equipment: Sturdy high-top hiking boots and trekking poles are essential companions.
  • Leave No Trace: Leave only footprints, take home only memories (and your trash).

“There is a stillness found only above three thousand feet, where the air grows crisp and the blue of the lake merges with the sky. That is when you realize why, once up here, part of you never wants to leave.”
