An Itinerary of Memory and Nature: From Dongo to Musso
A unique journey intertwining the defining moments of history with secret gardens and breathtaking views.
This itinerary guides you through landmark sites of Northern Lake Como, starting from the historic center of Dongo and ascending the slopes of Sasso di Musso—a seamless blend of culture, botany, and faith.
1. The End of the War Museum (Dongo)
The journey begins at the prestigious Palazzo Manzi. Here, a modern multimedia exhibition immerses you in the events of April 27, 1945, when a pivotal chapter in Italian history was written in Dongo with the capture of Mussolini. It is a deeply moving experience essential for understanding the town’s spirit.
2. The Merlo Garden (Giardino del Merlo)
Leaving the village behind, step into the Giardino del Merlo, a magical sanctuary suspended between Dongo and Musso. Created in the 19th century upon the steep crags of Sasso di Musso, this botanical park is a labyrinth of winding paths, grottoes, and exotic flora. You will stroll across small bridges surrounded by rare vegetation, with the deep blue of the lake constantly by your side.
3. Church of Sant’Eufemia (Musso)
Ascending along the paths of the Merlo Garden, you reach the picturesque Church of Sant’Eufemia. Set upon a natural terrace, it commands sweeping views over the lake stretching all the way to the promontory of Bellagio. It is the perfect spot for a contemplative pause, surrounded by the ruins of the ancient fortifications of Il Medeghino.
4. Church of San Gottardo (Dongo)
Heading back toward the center, the itinerary concludes at the Church of San Gottardo. Resting right on the lake shore, this small medieval gem welcomes visitors with its serene Romanesque simplicity—an ideal final stop to reflect on the journey, lulled by the gentle lap of the waves.
